The funny thing about being a composer is that, occasionally, you think of your instruments as sentient beings; you personify them. At times, they seem fragile in sadness, other times they are overwhelmingly powerful and ready to go- their "personal" characteristics become a defining force for the work in that particular time, and as a result you grow into them. You empower them because they have something very important to say, you want for people to appreciate their compassionate sounds; their understanding of deeper feelings. It's actually rather exhausting to pursue each of these concerns, especially when your work entails orchestral or ensemble compositions. But in the end, nothing is more fulfilling. I have become a close collaborator to the instruments.
